Why Is the New Symbolism also named Conceptual?

The term "New or Conceptual Symbolism" was first used by the Russian and American artist Vitaly Komar, who in 2009 in New York formulated the definition of this trend in the visual arts. In particular, in the magazine "INTERPOESIA" No. 3 for 2009, V. Komar wrote: "Even if this is the painting of one artist, it can restore the lost connection of art with historical and timeless myths. The "New Symbolism" creates symbols like mandalas and heraldic emblems, which, as conceptual signs, are connected with a picturesque dream." V. Komar further explains: "The images of a New, or in other words, Conceptual Symbolism are visions of an unborn, unpronounceable word. They are conceptual and akin not only to the art of the pre-Raphaelites and symbolists of the XIX century, but, to a greater extent, to the ancient syncretic symbols that thousands of years ago united the origin of writing and art." At the same time, one has to understand that the new or conceptual symbolism is a kind of postconceptual arts.

V. Komar's conceptual painting itself is more related to the painting direction by name "sots-art", but his comments on the images of the past and the future turned out to be, as well as possible, by the way. One of the consistent representatives of the current of New or Conceptual Symbolism is the Russian and Israeli artist Evgeny Gegouzin, whose paintings serve as a living confirmation of the relevance of the current. The nuance of conceptualism (or postconseptualism?) in Evgeny Gegouzin's art-objects is emphasized by the visible abstraction of his works from the banalities of being (beauties according to JJ. Kosuth) and the transition to simple and visual symbols-signs, with increased attention to the image of the circle and circular motion, as the foundations of the universe. And the hidden irony of many works makes them related to the masterpieces of sots-art.For lack of space, it makes no sense to delve into the evidence base, but it should be remembered that any work of art is conceptual and its author may have various ideas or concepts that he implements - often subconsciously - in his work, whether it is a symphony or a painting. However, in the artist's works of Conceptual Symbolism, such a multi-ideality is minimized and the works resemble - in this regard - scientific constructions, when a variety of creative research leads to a single mathematical formula. Therefore, we can say that the ideas of Conceptual or New Symbolism are applicable not only to painting, but also to other arts and sciences. Moreover, in the strange world in which the mankind finds itself today, it is Conceptual Symbolism that can be an alternative to the so-called multi-vector or polyvalent human thinking, based, ultimately, on the imperfection of the sound communication system, because the visual symbols on which this art trend is based are unambiguous and easy to understand.
